Heating growth stacks for Prince Edward Island companies

More than a third of PEI homes are heated mainly by heat pumps, and most of its heat pump rebates closed in 2026. In a small island market, the stack leans on proof, service and accurate copy.

Prince Edward Island is already deep into the heat pump era. In 2023, heat pumps were the primary system in 36% of PEI homes, while 28% of households relied mainly on oil, 18% on electricity and 8% on wood, according to Statistics Canada. With the main heat pump rebates closed in 2026, PEI heating companies are moving from a subsidy-driven market to one driven by service, replacement and reputation.

The PEI market and its buyers

Charlottetown is the largest centre, with Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall following. The climate is maritime, with cold, snowy winters moderated by the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The island is small enough that most heating companies serve most of it, and reputation travels quickly. Buyers include oil-heated households still considering a switch, owners of heat pumps installed during the rebate years who now need service and eventually replacement, and homeowners adding a unit to a second floor or an addition.

Accuracy first: cleaning up rebate copy

A lot of PEI heating marketing was written while generous rebates were open. Much of it is now out of date. Before adding anything new, a PEI stack needs an audit of every page, ad, text template and quote document that mentions a program.

  • Capture: remove or rewrite rebate claims, and replace them with service, maintenance and replacement pages.
  • Record: add a field noting whether a past customer installed during the rebate years; they are the replacement market of the next decade.
  • Demand: move ad copy from "free heat pump" style messages to reliability, service response and cold-weather performance.
  • Proof: in a small market, every review is read by a meaningful share of potential customers.

Programs to know, as of October 2026

  • The efficiencyPEI free heat pump program, including federal oil-to-heat-pump co-delivery, is shown as closed on the official efficiencyPEI page. We could not confirm the exact closure date.
  • efficiencyPEI residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15. Purchases made between 2025-04-15 and 2026-04-15 may still be claimed within one year of purchase (Government of PEI).
  • The Free Insulation Program was expanded under the federal-provincial agreement announced on 2026-06-29, with about $15 million for free attic and basement insulation for 1,800+ income-qualified homeowners (Canada.ca). Current intake details were not confirmed.

The PEI business mix and how we approach it

Most PEI heating companies are small and locally known, and many owners still answer the phone themselves. That is an advantage worth protecting: a missed-call text-back that sounds like the owner, and a CRM that reminds them who is due for service, keep the personal feel while removing the reliance on memory. On an island where many customers know the owner by name, a slow reply is noticed. For them, a full-scale ad programme is rarely the first priority. The review layer and maintenance reminders in the CRM usually produce more value per dollar, because they work on the large installed base of heat pumps.

Our usual order on the island: a copy audit as part of the blueprint, then CRM and reviews, then a modest, well-targeted ads budget. For published results from our HVAC work, see results, or return to all regions. To talk about a PEI stack, call, text or email.

Frequently asked questions

Are efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates still available?

As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15, and the official page for the free heat pump program says applications are closed. Purchases made between 2025-04-15 and 2026-04-15 may still be claimed within one year of purchase. Check with efficiencyPEI before mentioning either.

What can PEI heating companies still mention?

The Free Insulation Program, expanded under the federal-provincial agreement announced on 2026-06-29, is relevant for income-qualified homeowners. It is an insulation program rather than a heating rebate, so position it as a related comfort upgrade.

Which licences matter for PEI heating companies?

PEI requires a Mechanical Contractor Licence for boiler and pressure vessel work, with the current three-year cycle ending on 2027-12-31, and an LP Gas Personnel Licence for people servicing propane appliances. Confirm details with PEI Inspection Services.
